Marist School (Atlanta, Ga) Summer Camps

Personal Essay Start-Up

The Personal Essay Start-Up is a week-long writing intensive that will help students think past their first instincts in responding to requests for personal essays on college applications, supplements and scholarship applications.  Using actual prompts from the common and coalition applications as well as supplementary essays, students will learn strategies for the writing original, memorable, engaging essays that reflect the broad spectrum of who they are as a student and more importantly, as a whole person who will live and contribute to a college campus.

The week will be focused on generating student writing on a variety of topics and at a variety of lengths.  What kind of an essay works best when you have 650 possible words?  What happens when you only have an allotment of 150?  Can the same essay work for various prompts?

As the Personal Essay Start-Up offers a means of generating essays, it works well as a complement to the College Essay Workshops offered later in the summer at no cost to students through the Counseling Department, in which completed drafts of essays receive feedback from students, an English teacher and a college counselor.

Come find out how to begin find the words to express the varied and amazing person you are!
